Yugadi 2007 - Pujya Sri Swamiji's message

  1. When did time begin? We do not know. We do not know when it started and when it will end.
  2. But we do know this- time is indivisible and infinite
  3. Our elders have divided the incomprehensible, indivisible time into a number of fragments for ease of understanding.
  4. Each person follows a different system to measure time.
  5. Some follow the Sauramaana system (solar) while some others follow the Chaandaramaana system (lunar).
  6. We follow the Chaandramaana system and celebrate  the “Birthday” of Time.
  7. The birthday of Time itself is the Yugadi festival. This comes during the Chaitra month of the spring season. So much is the importance of this season that there is no poet in Indian literary world who hasn’t described the splendour of spring.
  8. Yajurveda says - “Madhushcha Maadhavashcha vaasantikaavrutoo”. The new year begins with spring.
  9. The Purushasookta says- “Vasantosyaa Seedaajyam”. It means that the Spring season is the fuel for the ritual of creation.
  10. The first respects are paid to the spring season in this ritual. So, it has been declared as the beginning of the year.
  11. Dharmasindhu, Nirnayasindhu and other treatises also state that spring is the beginning of the year.
  12.  Many extraordinary events in the epic Ramayana took place during the spring season.
  13.  There is a description of Yugadi in the Aranya Parva of the Mahabharata too.
  14. Yugadi is the day Dwaaparayuga ended and Kaliyuga began. It is thus the sacred epoch making day.
  15. In accordance with the laws of nature, this day marks the beginning of  the blossoming of flowers, ripening of fruits and sprouting of leaves in plants and trees. The entire nature seems to be engaged in joyful dance. The mind becomes fresh and the intellect becomes enlightened.
  16. That is why this day has been declared auspicious by our ancestors. This day is most suitable for beginning good deeds.
  17. It is said that the creator Brahma also began his creation on this day.
  18. Sri Rama was coroneted this very day.
  19. Let us aspire to do good things on this auspicious day. Let us sharpen our intellects so as to enable ourselves to achieve new goals.
  20. The journey of life is a mixture of sweet, bitter, sour and many other tastes. They keep visiting us time and again.
  21.  May the Lord of this year – Sarvajit bestow us with equipoise of mind. Let us learn to see everything with a balanced mind.
  22.  It is customary to read the Panchanga (almanac) of the year on Yugadi day. We should know from scholars as to what this year holds for us so that we can moderate our actions.
  23.  It should be borne in mind that this year is a year of mixed fortunes. There will be good harvest, but the prices will also be high. Everyone will earn profits and suffer losses too. Relationship with foreign countries will improve.
  24. There will be good progress in the field of education and science. However, people in those fields will behave somewhat sluggishly. There will be all round improvement in state of affairs after Vijayadashami.
  25. If we wish to turn the adversities into auspiciousness this year, we must worship Lakshmi Narayana. We must engage in rituals pertaining to Lord Vishnu. We must chant Vishnu Sahasranama.
  26. May Lord Dattatreya, the harmonizing power of all philosophies and religions bless the world with peace and prosperity. May His grace help us get over selfishness. May there be a feeling of brotherhood everywhere.
  27.  May Sarvajit bring success to everyone.

Jaya Guru Datta.
