In a
special ceremony on 11th February 2006, 92 newly built houses were
gifted to the citizens of Mudliyarkuppam village in Tamil Nadu. This
village had been totally destroyed when the killer Tsunami struck
the shores of India on December 26, 2004.
Mysore
Citizen Forum, in which Avadhoota Datta Peetham is a member took the
responsibility of totally rebuilding this ravaged village. In one
of the novel ideas in India, the citizens and institutions of a city
came forward to develop a destroyed village. More than 50 boats were
gifted to the fishermen last year itself so that they could begin
their life all over again.
On 11th
February, the village wore a new look with the entirely new village
getting ready to be inaugurated. Karnataka Chief Minister, Sri H.D.
Kumara Swamy, who assumed office a week ago came to the function and
handed over the keys to the villagers.
Sadguru
Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji of Avadhoota Datta Peetham, Jagadguru
Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji of Suttur Math, Sri Sushameendra
Teertha Swamiji of Raghavendra Mantralayam and the junior seer of
Adichunchanagiri Math Participated and Blessed the villagers in their
attempt for a new life.
It is planned
to develop 150 more houses in the second phase to ensure that all
families in the village have a house to live.
The name
of the Village has now been changed to "Mudliyarkuppam Mysore
Colony".
Sri Swamiji spoke
on the occasion and mentioned that the novel experiment of the citizens
of Mysore to pool up resources and assist a calamity ravaged area
proved successful and that was the reason for Datta Peetham to be
part of it. Sri Swamiji continued saying that the only force humans
had to face calamity was compassion to fellow beings. Sri Swamiji
remarked that Datta Peetham and devotees had donated more than two
million rupees for the Tsunami rehabilitation efforts.
