By
the evening of 21st December, the Universal Prayer hall had turned
into a Jain Prayer Hall. Sri Swamiji was seated on the left side of
the Prayer Hall (Srichakra Puja side) and a portrait of Jaina Teerthankara
(Jain prophet) was placed on a separate altar on the right side of
the Hall (in front of Sachchidanadeshwara Lingam).
Hundreds
of Jain devotees had gathered. The function began with the universal
prayer of Datta Peetham. Sri Krishnappa, the secretary of SGS Schools
welcomed the guests. Several Jain dignitaries participated as chief
guests. After the prayer, a Jain Mataji (woman saint) from Rajasthan
spoke about the salient features of Jainism. She expressed her appreciation
for Sri Swamiji for having organized such a congregation.
Sri
Harish Kumar Hegde, the legal advisor of Datta Peetham, who also belongs
to Jain community, spoke on the occasion and explained about the secular
nature of Datta Peetham.
Prof.Brhamappa,
one of the guests said that a lot of Brahmins followed Jainism till
the 10th century A.D. He quoted from a popular book written by a poet
of ancient India. He briefly explained the basic tenets of Jainism:
1. Ahimsa (non-violence) Live, and let live. Do not harm other beings
2. Aparigraha (not receiving) Dont aspire for anything extra.
Lead a light and smooth life.
3. Anekanta : Do not oppose any religion. Follow your religion and
respect all other religions.
"Sri
Swamijis personality is the embodiment of these three principles.
We are fortunate to have such a great person amidst us in this era.
We have known him to be a lover of all religions.
In
this function today, Sachchidananda is himself the Jaina. One who
loves all beings is a Jaina. Such a Jaina is giving us darshan in
the form of Sachchidananda" Sri Brahmappa said.
Sri
Swamijis speech
"Jaya Guru Datta. The whole essence of life is hidden in the
word Jaina. We must always remember this fact. We must
remind ourselves this fact always.
"In essence, all religions preach Nirguna concept only. Everything
merges in Nirguna. From Nirguna comes Guna. From Saguna comes this
creation. This is what is mentioned in the Vedas and Upanishads. Upanishads
also tell us the real purpose of life. Different Yogic paths emanated
from them. Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Karma Yoga the goal of
all these is the same. Flowers are different, but Pooja is one. Languages
may be different, but the feeling is the same. Just as there are different
modes of transport to reach the same goal, all religions take us to
the same goal ultimately. We must remember that we should remain steadfast
in the religion we are born in and should follow the precepts of our
religion.
"We must follow the verdict of the Almighty. Indeed, it is a
good idea to learn about all religions. But one should follow ones
own religion. In fact, one should sacrifice oneself for the sake of
religion. When we see the life of great men, we will realize it. We
may all be leading different lifestyles. We must however realize that
our aim is only one.
The speakers today have given a very sweet narration of the principles
of Jainism. I am very happy. All religions preach more or less the
same. Lead a truthful life; do not trouble others; do not get into
trouble; do not indulge in sinful acts; the Almighty is compassionate;
we must all accept His judgment. This is what all religions say.
"Prof. Brahmaiah jokingly said we have all come here to
this Ashram. We like the Ashram. If we say we will stay here permanently,
Swamiji may not invite us again at all! This remark may look
humourous, but if you think deeply, there is a lot of meaning in it.
The Almighty has given us a chance to be born in this world. There
is a purpose behind it. The purpose is that we should get rid of our
past Karma. We had But what will we do here? We begin to like this
world and say we want to be here permanently. Wise men say that we
should never entertain a desire like that. Some people are so attached
to their family, their house, their town, that they often pray that
they should take birth again and again in the same family and in the
same town. It is not a proper thing to do. In fact, to have desires
itself is ridiculous.
"We did not take birth to become permanent members here. We are
temporary guests here. Human life is like a season. It must end. Human
life is a golden opportunity to understand about the real meaning
of life. One should not become infatuated by this world.
"There was a strong feeling that I should see Jain families.
I am happy that you have all come here. You are always welcome here.
People tend to complicate things around and make life difficult for
themselves. Not only that, they spread the problem to their families
too. Sometimes a small problem will become a very big issue. There
ensues unnecessary suffering. We should ensure that such unfortunate
things do not happen. Let us hope that one day an International Jain
Congregation takes place here.
Jaya
Guru Datta".
Sri
C.B. Mahavir Prasad proposed vote of thanks. Many dignitaries from
various Jain institutions in Mysore attended this function. They were
all blessed with Datta Vastram.
After the function, dinner was served in Annapurna Mandir.
